comment What Impact Do Scripting Languages Have on Junior Programmers?
@Izkata there are abstraction layers all the way down to the metals, silicone, plastics. One would need several Ph. D. in physics, mechanical and electrical engineering if programmers had to be able to fix all abstraction leaks. (flaky RAM? Replace and move on.)

@Izkata then that's the problem of leaky abstraction, and it's the fault of the abstraction.

comment Stored Procedures a bad practice at one of worlds largest IT software consulting firms?
Oh, I know there is a process problem, but I came into the team with the system already set up this way, and there's no changing it now.

Mmm, interesting. Perhaps our experience varies. I'll keep that in mind when I make broad generalizing statements.

I didn't mention GUI IDE. Unix people generally don't use GUI IDEs. It's EMACS vs VIM and some Nano and Ed thrown in.

The data is only as good as the application. Garbage in garbage out and all that. If you have, hum, less-than-precise people writing the apps, there's very little you can do as a DBA to rectify the garbage.

@BarryBrown It doesn't work if people have access to the server directly and can change the stored procedures. I'd have to have a process that watches the SPs, or have a check before each use...

comment What is the best way to evaluate new programmers?
@Vatine FizzBuzz tests for logical reasoning ability, not programming skill. Granted, one ought to be able to do it. A simple programming question would be: display on screen a list of items sorted in an interesting way. They would have to code, but they would be able to draw on experience to come up with something to write, and not have to also try to figure out the brain teaser. I once failed an interview because they wanted me to use regex and I replied that for that problem regex is an overkill and python has built-in capabilities to do this. I didn't want to work there I guess.

I like to assume that there are bugs in the software that we haven't discovered yet. It's like searching for seismic faults. The question is how one looks for tell-tale signs.
