comment Is over-engineering a warning sign?
What about a simple solution of just adding a sentence at the end of the exercise saying "describe in as little code as possible" or something in those terms

Hi MainMa, so if I understand correctly it's proper to still make a say background class with all the piping, and then abstract it with an interface, and pass the interface to the function instead of straight calling from the class as in your first snippet.

@Max so what would be considered a utility function? I'm trying to understand, as it seems to me I'm very confused

Well I was wondering about MVC because it in a way forces structure. And as far as utility, I was under the impression everyone used them :) If I have an email sender code, and I split it into it's separate class to work with various parts of the system, isn't that a utility class or am I confused? I thought utility classes were once reusable in any program that aren't tied into the code

I would think, and likely wrong :), that 0 is false and 1 is true (not case in c++, with any positive int true), comes from the days of computers being programmed electronically. That is to say electrical signal gets sent, or doesn't to a pin. Kind of like a lightswitch on is I, off is O. So 0 is no electric, 1 is electric flow

comment Best approach for writing a chess engine?
Are trying to make the engine viable for 2 players to play? or for a player to play against the computer? if you're trying to play against a computer with any logic I personally don't see JavaScript being powerful enough for that

Have you checked out the Pedagogical section under the Chess Engine wiki. These seem to be meant specifically to teach Chess Programming and are all Open Source. Even if you don't use the actual source code the documentation will usually explain what's behind the development: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_engine#Categorizations

comment Is it smart to design a command and control server, that will monitor system resources and spin up/spin down servers at times of peak?
Glen, thanks for the insight, very helpful!!

Thank you, that seems more or less what I was looking for. So basically if I understand correctly, each server will periodically ping the C&C center, and if C&C notices a ping didn't come in within a certain set of parameters it'll consider the server dead

The biggest problem I can see is creating a single point of failure at the C&C server. Which I'm sure there would be a way to overcome, I'm just not sure how. Only way I can think is protecting against physical failure by replicating across regions, but that wouldn't protect against software failure. The software I assume can somehow be health-checked, but I have no idea where I would even begin on designing a health check.
