comment What is “using namespace” pollution?
It means that if you put "using namespace std;" in your code, you will get errors if you define your own max function (or any other name already defined in the std namespace)

comment When to pay for C++ compilers
This is how the support worked for the compiler I worked on, and I would suspect it would be similar for competing products in that market.

comment Faster reads, on an infinite grid plane, than using a hash table?
@Euphoric there is no mention of having control over the data only that there are some known properties.

It's only O(1) if you don't have many collisions. Depending on how your hash function distributes your data, you could have very fast or very slow accesses, and it's not necessarily something you can affect because the data might be out of your control.

@J.Robertson Use a global variable, it is the lesser of two evils here it seems.

I think the key part is "This class is a classic Singleton - it only needs to be instantiated once". This is the problem with most people's understanding of singletons. You don't use a singleton when it only needs to be instantiated once, you use a singleton when it MUST only be instantiated once. In all other cases you have a crappier version of a global variable.

comment Dota 2 running on Linux, Mac and Windows - How do they do it?
@SeanMcSomething I believe only the launcher is Adobe Air. The game is not. XNA is a C# game development framework. C# is definitely fast enough for game, just perhaps not the super high end ones like Crysis.

comment What are examples of comments that tell you why instead of how or what?
As I said in the answer, comments are unneeded even if there were no print statements, however I have edited it to remove the print statements in order to make the point clearer.
