comment Why can you have the method definition inside the header file in C++ when in C you cannot?
No, it was designed to have "A High degree of C compatibility", and "No gratuitous incompatibilities with C". (both from Stroustrup). I agree that a more in-depth answer could be given, to highlight why this particular incompatibility is not gratuitous. Feel free to supply one.

comment Convince developer to use IDE
John is still under probation. This is the entire point of probation periods, to give both companies and employees the opportunity for a fast exit if the hiring/joining decision turned out to be incorrect. Were he a long standing employee, my response would have been different. The overhead involved in getting rid of John is not the same as the overhead involved in getting rid of Bill.

comment “Comments are a code smell”
I'm stunned that took 2 months for this answer to come up. It demonstrates how widespread the misunderstanding of the term is.

comment Bringing code to an interview?
What I mean is that clean, well-written code that solves a tricky problem makes the problem appear considerably less tricky, thereby making the code itself appear considerably less interesting.

comment What to do if I hate C++ header files?
Your first sentence indicates that you don't "understand everything about headers". Including a .h file does not cause the corresponding .cpp file to be "somehow compiled too". You compile .cpp files independently in their own right. If you haven't compiled the corresponding .cpp, then the inclusion of a header without a corresponding object file will cause the linker to fail.
