comment What alternative is better to diagram this scenario?
When you ask a question, the placeholder text for the Title box is "What's your software development question? Be Specific." I don't think that "Very simple OOP question" is either specific, or a question.

comment Is it worth Learning XML as a web developer when JSON is better for AJAX?
@ErikReppen No, it stands for XML. See the article in which it first appeared or the Wikipedia Article on AJAX or this googlefight

comment Why don't we have web IDEs?
Another advantage is that your development environment is the same, regardless of whether you are at home, in the office, or in an internet cafe. However, this is also a problem that doesn't really exist, as many people carry flaptops.

If you pick digits from it at random, yes. ;)

comment Using XML as data storage
Natural Languages have been used to store data for centuries. Understandability also applies if the application that reads it becomes unusable (e.g. some 16-bit app that never got upgraded). Storing data in a human-readable format makes it easier to port; particularly if the format was never particularly well documented or the documentation is also lost.

comment Should a software developer get a yearly equipment budget?
@stijn I see what you mean, but isn't that more about the competence of the people who provision the hardware, than about whether you provision it yourself?

comment Rewriting GPL code to change license
If the other library is not compatible with GPL, perhaps that is the library you need to change.

comment Why was Tanenbaum wrong in the Tanenbaum-Torvalds debates?
@Jeroen gratis, yes. libre, no. If you see the word "free" near GNU, it's typically more libre than gratis.

comment Software Engineer VS “Harder” Jobs
@Justin C According to the idiom, the one doing the criticising is normally the one to have to walk a mile in the other's shoes. In OP's situation, the Software Engineer is being criticised, therefore it is the software engineer's shoes that must be walked in by the critics.

comment Does new generation of programmers use Emacs?
After 20 years of developing, you may not be a proper greybeard yet, but I certainly wouldn't count you as the new generation.

comment Should you answer programming interview questions with library?
Agreed. For a six element list on a modern computer, the only sort algorithm with a significant cost is bogosort. Just call the default sort and get on with solving real problems.

Surely you mean AJAJ? The X in AJAX stands for XML.

comment Why are programming salaries higher than most other common “educated” careers?
Also, someone with a first degree in Computer Science could just as well move into Law.

There is an infinity of stuff I don't want my program to do. How do you decide what to put in the else branch?

comment When is it appropriate to not unit test?
@Ken Pespisa, It's definitely quicker - write the code based on whether you think it's 0 or 1, run it, fix it if needed. Most of the time, you'll be right and you'd have skipped having to look it up, if you are wrong, you know within 10 seconds.

comment Techniques for parsing XML
@TMN, that sounds like one of those phantom requirements: "Of course all of our documents are only about 100KB, and the biggest we've seen is 1MB, but you never know what the future holds, so we should keep our options open and build for infinitely big documents"

Whenever I see a phrase like "This needs to expand to many more...", I immediately think "This should be a loop".

Although I disagree with you about Function hell, your solution is (IMHO) the correct one, and the one that would arise from proper application of Clean Code & SRP.
