comment How should I represent to-be binary data?
@BenCottrell: I can indeed change the C++ code. Can I do custom serialization with the protocol buffers though? The serialization has to be backwards-compatible.

comment How should I represent to-be binary data?
@BenCottrell: Thanks for the suggestion! I'm actually re-implementing some C++ app's custom serialization (yep...), so I can't take that option in this case.

comment Should I store cryptographic hashes as a blob or as a string?
@5gon12eder: Hmm, I will have to store a few million of these... they'd be 64 bytes instead of 32 bytes, so it may add up to, say, 100 MB eventually... which is not the worst thing, but it does get noticeable.

comment Does giving a developer a slower development machine result in faster/more efficient code?
The answer is actually yes if you only test on your development machines, but there are better ways to achieve the same results.

comment How can I explain the difference between NULL and zero?
NULL is the complete cessation of suffering? Woah! I gotta use that more in my code.
