What are some advantages / disadvantages to working on a remote development machine? @Thorbj, Yes it will go faster. I find that virtuals running VS2008 really want 1.5GB of memory to run in. My host cannot allocate any more (Outlook eats way too much). |

Why do large IT projects tend to fail or have big cost/schedule overruns? Agile is best when the customer does not know what they want. Companies are generally unwilling to spend the huge amounts that tend to get into newspapers on projects that are poorly defined. |

Is functional programming actually used to create applications? A fascinating and scary comment comes from the last line of the Wikipedia article on GOAL: "GOAL's primary development and maintenance engineer is no longer available to Naughty Dog, and so they are transitioning to a C++ based pipeline for future projects." Which means that they bet their company on one programmer and when he quit they don't know how to deal with the language/framework he wrote. |

How do I constructively and professionally deal with anger when I'm on the job? I agree. I usually find that, for me, the anger is the result of frustration and going for a walk also gives my subconscious time to chew on the problem. |

Working for free? @Malfist, the contracting company only took over because his long time personal friend asked him to. The money was gone before he got his rear end stuck into the bear trap. Could I stick it to him? Yes, I could. At this point I want the pain to be over and done with. |

Which are the significant algorithms for humankind in past decades? To this list, I'd add 2 books, although they were more about "most important theorems" of the 20th century: Five Golden Rules amazon.com/Five-Golden-Rules-20th-Century-Mathematics/dp/… , and Five More Golden Rules. amazon.com/Five-More-Golden-Rules-20th-Century/dp/0471395285 |
