I'm Gideon Israel Dsouza. Check out my CV on Careers. (gidisrael-at-gmail-com)

I've been teaching myself programming since I was about 11.

I have the odd need to know how everything works. I own Linux, OSX and Windows and play with C#, Perl, Python, RaspberryPi's and Arduino. Check out my CPAN modules and my latest side project : http://perlmonksflair.com/

I will usually edit your question or answer if it's a huge block of unstructured text :)

Behold my Unicorn:

comment How do programmers in the West see programmers in the East?
To 1&2 no I didn't answer his question, but precisely what you said, I voiced my opinion about what I see (no rants) because I read all the western views and bad experiences and noticed a little pattern. I only tried to talk about my perspective from here. 3. Yea was ironic for me too, I didn't intend for it to be an answer but some sorta opposing view! =)

comment Interview question: which is the time period estimated by you to learn Java
A good programmer can just pick up java syntax in a few hours. Especially someone strong with OOP. Now, getting used to it, getting proficient enough to write good code and most importantly understanding the little nuances of any language can take a long long time. Its been 5 years and I still don't think I know enough C#

comment Is Software Testing Really Needed?
@anto No, I'm from Mumbai. I used to teach at Aptech a few years ago and I've met/taught a lot of B.E. and Bsc(CS/IT) students. I know what you feel like. But its good that you're trying to learn.. not many people do.

@anto :) its what I thought. I've met a good deal of guys done/doing a B.E. Programming is more "write a program to print asterisk in a triangle" Just start programming.... thats all you need to do. (1) Get some books (2) Read tutorials online (3) Look at code, download samples, open source apps. Then you'll know the diff. between you college programs and real world programs and why you need testing. =)

+1 You make extremely good real world points!! Wish I could double vote!

comment Is Software Testing Really Needed?
@anto Anyway, I'm assuming again you've probably NOT written some real world programs, all you've done so far is write one page programs that print ASCII on screen or something. When you write a real world program that is supposed to a number of even seemingly simple tasks you run into the things @jmquigley talks about and there is NO way you can get it correct. Thats why you need testing.

@anto Its highly likely your from an Indian school? I don't mean it badly, I just might have an idea of your background with the B.E. down here....

@Evan we will only really make good money if we were to come over and work at your wage.. then come back here with all that money (or send it over here) which is why so many indians want to move out of the country. Your welcome :)

comment need some concrete examples on user stories, tasks and how they relate to functional and technical specifications
Update : One thing I learnt here is not to over think and engineer stuff. As I went coding I learn't more about the system and the requirements.

@pekka if I accept the invite I can put up my resume anytime? Not necessarily immediately?

@pekka yes I do, I do plan to apply, but, I'm just waiting for an acknowledgement/appreciation letter for the work I've done (because not many people believe me) Hopefully that letter will come from the Chief General Manager of the largest bank in India =P (which happens to be my high profile client)

@victor thanks but places like SO makes me see I'm shooting fast balls while there are others shooting bullets.

comment Why is it so hard to find anything on MS site?
@eestein :) true, infact their naming strategy should be a little better! (Like Astoria>Ado.net data services>WCF data services) Like I said I'm just seeing too much MS hate lately and I don't like it. Thats mostly why I posted my opinion.

comment Why is it so hard to find anything on MS site?
@eestein I was only talking in terms of efficiency, i mean googling is the fast way to find a page, so if you're looking for a fast of doing things there it is, but of course, its not like the pages and categories don't exist.

@Amir well thats what the product list is, isn't it? Each product will have tons of downloads so instead you go to the product page first and then you see a list of downloads there.

@Amir see my answer, it has an actual solution (There is a page with all products and you can easily navigate to the .net Download link)

+1 for MSDN is difficult to organize, have you seen google documentation, the Picasa API docs a few months ago was for v1.6 Google Data Lib but the latest version of the lib was 1.7 released weeks ago.

comment How do programmers in the West see programmers in the East?
@Mike glad you saw it, yes, this question (or atleast my answer) maybe be applied in general terms to most industries and India is the way it is because of poverty here and the population, which just makes the standard of like plain terrible, which then leads to things like @Scant Roger talks about, I made my point because I'm scared of ignorant hatred.

comment How important is Domain knowledge vs. Technical knowledge?
+1 @Sri Kumar true, but I think being a programming, you should still be able to figure out what it is they need and how you would use technology to bring about a solution. I agree, writing business solutions means coming across all kinds of businesses.
