Developer in scientific fields.

  • My world is vertical market shrinkwrap. Do you know your world?
  • VB6, VB.NET, C, Fortran, Perl, PHP...
  • User interfaces, graphics, data manipulation, numerical models.
  • Database stuff with Access/MySQL/SQL Server.
  • Physics degree, little formal training in development

In my young days I used to write things like compilers and chess programs for fun - but that was last millenium :)

comment How should a non-IT manager secure the long-term maintenance and development of essential legacy software?
Between you and your current consultants you can probably figure out a plan. You have asked them? And don't worry too much about the hyperbole in some of the comments & answers here.

comment What should I do if I have a genius team lead which does not share?
+1 Team lead may also feel overworked & stressed, and get irritable at interruptions. They may not have realised that if they can manage you better, making a little more time to brief you, you can be more effective and get work done yourself rather than the team lead doing it, which should reduce the stress on the team lead. It can take a while for a lead to learn the lessons about effective delegating.

comment Is this a typo in the Artistic License 2.0?
It is a typographical error. You should probably report it to the Perl foundation!

comment When is it reasonable to create my own programming language?
I just edited your answer to point to Paul Vick's article again rather than the Google cache. In 2011 he "reset his blog" and deleted all the VB content, but in 2012 he put it back although with different URLs. Sounds like he was personally having a hard time when he deleted that stuff.

comment Can I use open source libraries in my project which is released into the public domain?
@DavidNordvall Releasing the code to the public domain makes it worse. Many license restrictions only apply if you distribute your derived works (e.g. to a customer, business partner, other person). If you keep it to yourself, you are less restricted.

comment Is it possible to build a custom email client for Gmail using Java APIs?
+1 Nitra. @gnat. The link answers the question: "how to build a custom email client for Gmail using Java APIs". The link is to StackOverflow, which is another Stack Exchange site. This question is a near-duplicate of the linked question (not quite exact duplicate because this question implicitly covers sending as well as receiving email).

comment How common is string manipulation, really?
+1 Because I don't believe the question deserves all the downvotes. It's a perfectly reasonable question.

comment Why job postings always looking for “rockstars?”
@gnat It's a joke. "Band on the runtime" was made up of a few famous developers in the .Net world, with musical talent too, who played gigs at programming conferences. "Rockstar developer" is a silly term, so a (cw) joke is a reasonable answer. It's a phrase that shouldn't be taken literally.

comment Why can't SQL return joined tables in a nested format?
Are you sure this is an example of object-relational impedance? Seems to me that the relational model perfectly matches the conceptual data model of the OP: each user is associated with a list of zero, one, or more email addresses. That model is also perfectly usable in an OO paradigm (aggregation: the user object has a collection of emails). The limitation is in the technique being used to query the database, which is an implementation detail. There are query techniques around which do return heirarchical data, e.g. heirarchical DataSets in .Net

Another question for the list of good suggestions: how does a non-technical manager add value to a self-motivated team of software developers

comment Slowly realising that I should have asked for a way higher salary
+1 You have asked for a raise before your review & been given one. This is a good signal that there is still some more scope for a higher salary. But I would wait until the next review before asking again (assuming that your reviews are annual & therefore the next one is under 6 months away).

comment How many days is it normal for a new hire programmer to take to get up to speed?
+1 What about the business knowledge / domain knowledge? How did you know what changes were needed in the code?
