It's frequently impossible to justify spending employer's money rewriting code to be more self-explanatory, when a good comment can do the job in much less time. A dutiful programmer must use her/his judgment each time.

An old version of Emacs respected a per-file variable assignment of the value nil to the well-known variable t. Since the sole purpose of t is to indicate a Boolean true value, whereas nil conventionally represents false, this was a horrifying prank.

It can be useful and efficient to return a const reference. If you do this, you should document how long the returned reference should be considered valid.
