comment How to execute a Ruby file in Java, capable of calling functions from the Java program and receiving primitive-type results?
Download the "JRuby 1.7.2 Complete.jar" file from jruby.org/download (you'll also find language installations on the same page, which are useful for development, but your final system will require the complete.jar only!)

Actually, as far I recall, according to the excellent “Java concurrency in practice” book, the java.util.concurrent util classes are actually faster. Behind the scenes these classes directly talk to the VM, where as synchronized installs a blunt lock on object in the object graph and thus impacts global performance.

comment Is programming language that is non-visual … possible?
A PhD student of Alan Blackwell, U of Cambridge, works on programming languages for artists and did a language for dancers. Alan presented this in his VLHCC keynote. Also there are blind programmers! I'd love to elaborate on this but alas the question is closed. Maybe @JarrodRoberson could use his moderation powers to reopen this, IMHO very interesting and valid, question!?
