comment What do you use string reversal for?
@clockworkgeek - if you ask a candidate to do string reversal in their favorite language, you'd be surprised how many don't come up with the basic function you mentioned. Then how many can't come up with a loop to implement it themselves.

comment How could your company's learning/development department best serve you?
@HLGEM - probably depends on how your company is set up whether or not this makes sense or whether other hours make sense. In my experience mandatory training is usually done on company time, optional training at lunch.

comment What is the one bit of computer science theory I should know?
It's not CS theory, but this is an excellent answer.

As good as CS theory is, I've found that EEs lack of software engineering best practice is the thing that makes the code bases they work on the most painful, not the lack of data structures and algorithm knowledge.

comment As a student, what techniques used by faculty helped you learn the most?
I would add that professors' jobs are to teach you data structures/algorithms/theory even more than languages, but other than that - yes.

comment As a student, what techniques used by faculty helped you learn the most?
As a professional getting a graduate degree while working, I realized early on that my professors' code (every single one of them) would not have gotten a good response at code reviews at my company.

comment How do you interview someone with more experience than you?
@Rachel - some of my interviewees had been working in the industry since before I was born. I usually found the best way to calm the nervousness after step one was to skip to step 3 and get the candidate comfortable talking about his or her strengths.
