Very good point about unit testing. I'm not saying always wrap in order to be able to unit test you application, but it is a good strategy for decoupling dependencies when needed.

@vartec: you are right, now that I re-read my answer after ten months I don't know what I was thinking. Obviously the only right way to say something when speaking English is in English, even acronyms.

comment When is code “legacy”?
@Jerry: I don't know why you consider unit tests a "methodology". I think a definition of legacy code as code which is difficult to maintain because you don't have tests to know when you break it is a very natural and pragmatic definition, independent of any methodology.

I think the question implies that the class actually requires the string to be not empty. That is not the case in your StringBuilder example.
