comment Is it safe to convert Windows file paths to Unix file paths with a simple replace?
Backslashes are allowed in filenames on Linux, so replacing backslashes in a Linux path could add invalid directories. For example, /foo\\bar isn't equivalent to /foo/bar on Linux.

comment Why is Java not 'pure' OOP?
I don't think the syntax is what makes it less OO - what matters is the semantics. In Python, for example, you can use numbers as objects without explicitly calling the int() constructor, e.g. (3).__eq__(4) == False. I don't think OO itself necessitates that everything must be explicitly created with constructor syntax.

comment A license like the LGPL, but compatible with JavaScript
Why do you think users will distribute unmodified versions without giving credit? Open source licenses generally require the copyright notice to be preserved, which includes the attribution. Preventing people from stealing credit and preventing people from distributing unmodified copies are two different things.

I'm not really sure how this relates to programming.

comment Why would some company buy a domain with different name when It can add sub-domains to its domain?
@Oded I could be wrong, but having a separate domain might help if you want to keep your cookies separate from user content for security reasons. That might make it on-topic.

comment Can we take ideas from GPL programs in developing any commercial app
@tgkprog No, there are permissive open source licenses that don't require that. The question is about the GPL though, which is a "viral" license.

comment Best practices to avoid fake profiles?
That would probably stop a lot of humans too who aren't willing to give out their phone number, or don't have mobile phones.

comment Is it possible to create a 2d game for both linux and windows with next to no changes?
@DeadMG I don't think that's worth noting, the question is "is it possible" not "should I do it".

comment Why does the Java collections APIs not have a last method?
@Alb Using negative indexes is more powerful than a last() method, since you can get the nth-to-last element just as easily with get(-2), get(-3), etc. I wouldn't call it a hack.

comment git: having separate folder for development, why?
Are you saying that all source repositories should be private?

comment Is it a bad practice to write shell script with many if-else statment and for loops?
@DocSalvage Doing something every N iterations in a loop isn't an exception, since exceptions are for when the code cannot continue normally. Also, exceptions don't necessarily require OOP.

comment Why do some programmers prefer spaces over tabs?
@RiaD Then you end up with inconsistent line wrapping (too long or too short), since line lengths are specified in absolutes (N characters) while tab stops are flexible.

comment Why does Java not do type inference?
@ratchetfreak Could type inference not be added in a backwards-compatible way? Older programs would just be providing more type information than necessary.

comment Should your best programmers have to check everyone else's code into source control?
@ErikReppen It's not hard to undo a commit in Git. I'm not sure how Mercurial could solve this in a way that Git can't.
