comment Data structure supporting the following operations
If it is ML or a related language in which you would code this data structure, you could use SOME (category name) or NONE in the place of String. Could you otherwise use a null string to indicate uncategorized information?

comment Next language? Something practical but off the beaten path?
@gnat I don't remember the original motivations behind recommending Go. If it were today, I think readability, OO, practical will be the reasons I'd recommend. These being some of the things asked in the questions. I have not spent as much time as I'd like to with this language. So I don't remember what I might have known back then and know much lesser now.

comment KISS principle applied to programming language design?
Scheme(r) was used as a teaching language for years (decades?) and was developed by simplifying LISP and Algol (and may be more). The book SICP takes very less time to teach the language itself. Also, DSLs come to the mind.

comment How do you accept arguments in the main.cpp file and reference another file?
You don't have to worry about functions being defined in other files as long as you include their headers and link them properly at compile time. If you have written up something already, it will be easier to explain using that.

comment svn usage advice
You could branch for each bug at the same time, resolve potential conflicts when merging them back, or, branch out for the first, merge back and then branch out for the second. There may be other ways of approaching this too. Was this the question about? Am I missing something?
