comment What exactly makes code “clean”?
I don't think complexity belongs here - some problems are computationally heavy, but that doesn't make them unclean.

comment Why do we need private variables?
For the record, creating a private method doesn't increase "security". Other parts of your application can still access private members using reflection.

comment What is a good way to comment if-else-clauses?
Comments aren't meant for explaining what your code does, but why. The code itself should be enough for future developers to understand what is being done. There are exceptions for long regular expressions, bit twiddling etc.

comment Is Object Oriented stuff really that important?
@TimothyBaldridge No, patterns are just a way of discussing programming ideoms, so you won't have to say "it's a piece of code where you...". Patterns were not invented to solve problems, patterns were observed in existing code and later on named as patterns. Also, patterns cannot be turned into simple functions. Patterns are a certain way of utilizing functions. Just as State Pattern is just a certain way of using if-else statements.

comment Is Object Oriented stuff really that important?
@SnOrfus I'm advocating for OO, because that's the world I'm most familiar with. I'm not familiar with functional language strategy pattern

comment Why Use !boolean_variable Over boolean_variable == false
@A-Cube I wouldn't have a method like that to begin with. Instead, I'd have a method called done(). Double negatives are bad.
