No problem. I was just making sure I understood the concept.

I assume that you'd put "SomeWrench" into the setWrench() method, not "SomeHammer", right?

Excellent. Found this post before I could find the info on github. Bravo.

@Rudy consider the Rands test in addition to the Joel test. randsinrepose.com/archives/2011/10/11/the_rands_test.html

comment How can I figure out if programming is right for me?
Also remember that the better you get at programming, the more power you have to choose jobs that are enjoyable for you, instead of code that just pays the bills.

Who decides when a technology increase is significant in this case?

comment How can I deal with the cargo-cult programming attitude?
Another way to supply code is to require them to interact with a class you've written (that doesn't work with previous code) and make a requirement of the assignment that your code can't be changed, and they must modify their own code to make the assignment work.

@blunders Check out dhmn.net/wiki for a pretty good implementation of a wiki.

@OghmaOsiris The Alice link is broken. The trailing " was added to the url.

comment Audiobooks for programmers?
Right. Not all good programming books translate to good audiobooks, hence the question.

I put in an edit request to remove the rockstar-programmers tag, as it doesn't appear to apply.

comment How do I impress employers with my resume?
The exception to this would be either volunteer or open-source work. Depending on how well you worked on those projects, some may be willing to count that as experience.

Edited your post for grammar and spelling. "i" should be capitalized. Contractions need an apostrophe (') or to be split into two words. Spell out words like "because". Employers expect graduates and potential employees to be able to do these things without thinking about them.

comment And if I ask the job interviewer for reasons to join the company?
Another way of phrasing this question is "What are some of the reasons that led you to join this company?" or "What are some of the benefits that have positively influenced your employee retention?" (assuming, of course, that their employees do indeed stay around). It encourages a sense of camaraderie, and it is quite possible that their reasons for working there might be good reasons for you, as well.

comment Ideas to maximize learning in a gap year taken for learning programming?
I disagree. For some people, a gap year could provide a valuable time for the person to ask some of the bigger questions (such as "What do I want to learn?" and "Where do I want to be?") without paying to study things that may not serve those goals. Take it from a Psychology/French Liberal Arts Major who spent a fair bit of time changing to a programming career path after having fully committed to a different path in college. However, a "gap semester" may achieve the same thing.

Your current level of programming experience (languages known, etc.) will be very helpful in allowing other programmers to give you advice about this.

@Alison Anyone with a rep above 300 can create a new tag. However, such a tag might be controversial. I created a meta discussion thread on this point: meta.programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/1253/…
