I've been a programmer since I taught myself BASIC on an old TRS-80; I wised up and got my CIS degree but the learning never stops. Currently working with Java and transitioning to .Net and SharePoint.

Common for programmer to be asked to maintain code in a different language? +1 for the link to the article, it was spot on. |

Is defining a variable to name a method argument a good practice? @Nate-C-K It is a bit much to expect devs to read the entire spec for a language, especially one that is actively changing. I kept up with Java changes up until generics were introduced, it was too much to do my day job, read up on the latest practices AND then read through language specs which may or may not be updated again later. It's like expecting people to have looked at the API's for all the classes in the libraries for Java or C#; they are just too big and change too often. |

How to handle “can you add just a few more fields” type of requests from customers? Plus, there could be other enhancements that would be a better use of development time. It's not that the developers want to tell the customers how to spend their money, most really want what is best for the customers. Unlike a sleezy stero salesman who gets paid on commission, it's in our own best interest to not waste development time if alternatives exist. The question is, how to communicate that. |
