Another note to any time-traveling readers: Windows 8 (and up) development will no longer be free in the future.

On the ethical side of things: "Another problem is freetardism". Don't you understand? This isn't about Windows vs. Mac vs. Linux. This is about the ability to use your computer in any way you want. Microsoft is actively working to take control of your computer using Windows 8. You can only install Windows Store apps from the Microsoft-approved Windows Store, and the freedom to install any desktop apps (or the desktop interface itself) will probably disappear in the near future. Think about that for a moment. If Microsoft gets its way, you won't own your computer, Microsoft will.

"As somebody pointed out earlier Linux is a mess for developers". At least you don't have to pay to develop for Linux. And why would you need an IDE when Linux is an IDE?

As I understand it, there are two reasons: (1) Most game devs are primarily targeting Windows, and so rationalize there is no reason to use a cross-platform API. (2) OpenGL may be faster and more powerful, but I recall hearing that the DirectX API is a lot cleaner and easier to use (no link). I, personally, prefer OpenGL.
