comment Canonical representation of a class object containing a list element in XML
Good point, however the next step I'd think of would be to user wrapper classes for consistency in every case, otherwise one would have to know each time whether a list might or might not contain elements of different types.

I'm not convinced by the XML language but I'll take it into account.. Actually there are some editors for docbook like xmlmind.com/xmleditor/ which might make it a viable solution.

html is needed for the online website, pdf is usually sent via mail or inside the installation cd, word or similar is because staff is used to use word or similar for writing, I cannot tell them to start coding latex or html. If you could expand your "how most big software companies do it" into an answer I'd appreciate

comment Is the database the bottleneck or not? High Scalability talk
The question was whether to create complex queries and let the database return the results or just using the database to retrieve data and then do operations on it in the program. In both cases disk or memory could be hit by the RDBMS but it's not the point

Ok I agree, we'll never know until we measure, however I'd like a general opinion on the matter. Measuring without knowing what the expected output should be is not useful for me.

So putting the logic in the program instead of in SQL queries is a desperate hack to avoid using a proper NoSQL database and scaling horizontally with it? Am I right?

comment How to offer custom word processor like editing power from an application
This is an interesting solution although my application has to work standalone and I cannot require to install a server for this. I might however search for Java reporting tool..

Preparing three separate plugins would be even worse than programming it straight in our application. I hoped to hear some canned solutions because to me this problem seems general enought to have been already solved thousands of times.

Hmm not really, one could for instance point me to some protocol to specify how to visualize a spreadsheet starting from some saved preferences of the user. Or tell me how they managed to use a third party editing tool which works under Java and takes care of it all. I don't see it very product management related..
