comment Is it bad practice to store metadata information in file names? Better solutions?
You are raising gut points. But there are situations when it nevertheless makes sense to put the information in the filename. Think of mail attachments which have to be routed or processed in a rule-based fashion. If many parallel processes have to change the master file, it might become a bottleneck.

comment How to find bottlenecks in an application?
Yes, you have a point there. But rather than "wild guessing" it usually helps to focus on the resource identified in 2. A profiler can be used more efficiently and effectively if you have narrowed down the tuning options.

comment Implement FBP / Dataflow programming in VBA?
@DocBrown: If the Flow is modelled as a Petri Net or a Finite State Machine, it can be easily implemented in VBA. But this would then be a fully synchronous scheme which lacks the alleged benefits of FBP. If FBP is actually able to structure complex applications and to distribute the components seamlessly across multiple processors, VBA is definitely not the best choice as FBP programming language and development environment.

comment Implement FBP / Dataflow programming in VBA?
The C# FBP implementation (jpaulmorrison.com/fbp/CsharpFBP-2.3.zip) of "Component" makes heavy use of Threads. So does the Java implementation. Co-routines should be sufficient but difficult to implement in VBA. One could use Excel's inherent serialization feature which is working behind recalculation of a spreadsheet. But this would probably lead to a very limited mini-FBP.

There is a somewhat related post on multi-threading in Excel 2007: stackoverflow.com/questions/14677866/… Multi-threading is not fully supported in VBA.
