I am a Python / Django developer. I specialize in developing SAAS applications using Django. My language of choice is Python, but I am sometimes forced to use English. Django rules.

comment What do you wish language designers paid attention to?
@EvanPlaice - though I can feel your pain, I have to side with the BDFL, only because I'm a proponent delegating maintenance to those who need it (ie, companies who don't want to invest in upgrading can invest in maintaining 2 versions of their code). For instance, I can't stand how Django takes 500 years to add 1 feature (hyperbole intended), because they're busy with half their time maintaining old versions and old code. In short, I like rapid releases and hate legacy code.

@EvanPlaice - Well yeah, but nobody uses 3k, yet (and by that, I mostly mean Django :)

comment When deciding on whether or not to work for a new company, what are your dealbreakers?
I like to be right in the middle of the pack. If they do trimming, you don't wanna be cut with the other noobs, but you definitely want to have lots of peeps to learn from and room to grow.

@David - that falls into category C.

When a programmer says, "Submit a patch" it always means one of three things: A) They're too lazy to code it themselves even when they may like the idea, B) They don't understand what you mean and are too lazy to try (or are apathetic about learning), or C) The feature doesn't benefit them directly and don't care to help others unless it also benefits them.

comment When should an IT consultant use full disc encryption?
@Pan - There are robbers out there. However, I don't put all my belongings into a safe, just the most important ones (passport, gold, etc). Instead, I have security to help prevent somebody getting access to all my belongings. This saves me from the side effect overhead of having to go into the safe to get a cup out when I want water, or pants when I get dressed in the morning. I use a hard to guess password to lock the safe, so the things I care about the most are less likely to get stolen.

comment Any tips to learn how to program with severe ADHD?
@Newtopian - good lord that's a frightening way to look at it. You're right, but it's a fact of life when you have ADHD. The meds a doctor will give you have the exact same effects, and even more dangerous side-effects.

comment How do you know you're writing good code?
@Jeremy - + 1, re-factoring is a fine tool for honing your skills, but when you get too OCD on it (as I have), it becomes an obsession.

@RHSeeger - indeed!!! Even in Python you have to type u'My Unicode Štring'. I wish you could just forget what type of string you're dealing with and friggin write code.

@twinborn - drink lots of coffee. I kid you not. I have ADD, and coffee helps me stay on task greatly. I have high blood pressure but I can't stop drinking coffee and still concentrate, so I take Lisinipril.
