Yeah, I have methods in place that upgrade legacy versions to modern versions and I have a very clear layout of how my classes are laid out. I'm not overly worried about that, but I do agree it's important. I've been working on this for almost a year, so I do have a pretty clear view of how it's structure works.

I am serializing using protobuf-net (code.google.com/p/protobuf-net) which is extensible. But your points are valid, however, I don't think that their is any method of file format that is immune to this.

Yes, my project is much more complex than just that, but I am also attempting to make it less user readable since we might deploy these in a field in a licensed context. I am currently using protobuf-net to serialize my data and that much works great. But I have to serialize pieces separately, so what you are talking about with the Packaging library sounds like what I need.
