@Mudassir: Akash's question is specific and relevant to anyone who does programming in various foreign-languages. I don't think his question is un-welcome here.

comment Dealing with engineers that frequently leave their jobs
Asking a newbie where they see themselves in 5 years time is overkill. You'd get a half-baked answer borrowed from multiple people who've been interviewing.

A kid tells his mom that he won't need maths coz he's gonna grow up and be a millionaire baseball player. His mom tells him "You'll need maths to count your millions".

In this case, I'm actually trying to yank out a highly coupled graphics engine and replace it with a graphics engine which is to be 'yankable'. All in VC++.

Correct, the tech-lead needs the design now because others depend on it. We're to get these docs ready so that a foreign team (we're maintaining the software they created) can review it and they're visiting our country in a week's time. They don't know the new graphics engine, so they won't really be able to review it, also given that a lot of the class and sequence diagrams are auto-generated in EA, and hence human-un-readable. TL's main objective appears to be to get us to do things quickly as there's a lot of slippage because of a team member who left the company.

comment Boss is afraid to use a version control system for new project, should I anyway?
@S.Lott: Another way to see it is that the boss is a boss of a small firm, thus inexperienced, and the OP stands a chance of not only creating a good impression but also benefiting the company's growth if he can convince his/her boss well.

I'm supposed to convert a lot of existing tightly coupled DirectX and GDI calls into a separate black-box kind of graphics engine which works on a popular rendering library. It's a complete concept change, so the tech-lead initially wanted me to see the code, the interfaces and figure out how to modify it. I tried, ended up lost and reported it to him. That's why he's suggested the code-review. Although as you said, it's gonna be hard without communication from the team and without good documentation. What did you mean by "QA step"? I'm taking the whole thing positively though.

comment What is negative code?
A wise teacher may have accepted this BASIC program and used it to highlight the importance of getting an SRS right. Reminds me of a baseball coach who got so frustrated with his team that to show them how to play, he took the bat, got three strikes in a row and not to be outdone, he shouted to his team "See! That's how you bas***** are playing. Now take the bat and play properly!". Also reminds me of the person who wrote "creation saw the creator and blushed" and won the essay contest on 'wine'.
