comment Empty interface to combine multiple interfaces
I think this absolutely fine. Better than some of the other approaches proposed in other answers.

@nes1983: I wrote that in 2011. Things were different then.

comment Tension between the dependency inversion principle and avoiding “new” in C++?
It can be used to create a sort of factory pattern if the alleged factory just returns a pointer to an object which was created earlier by the top level code. So, less of a factory and more of a warehouse, as the top level is creating it, then leaving it there.

@Kazark: The method described here can (AIUI) only be used to inject dependencies down the stack. But that actually fits the typical pattern of dependency injection, where some top level code makes decisions about what objects to construct, and then injects them into each other.

comment Why was dependency injection pattern not included in the Gang of four?
@BilltheLizard: Aha. I don't think of that as a kind of IoC, but i suppose it is really, as long as some external agent controls the binding service names to services.

comment Why didn't “cloud computing” offer appear earlier?
John McCarthy wrote in 1983 that "The major technical error of my 1959 ideas was an underestimation of the computer capacity required for time-sharing. I still don't understand where all the computer time goes in time-sharing installations, and neither does anyone else.", so at least some of the features of cloud computing had been discovered that far back!

@JörgWMittag: It's commodity in that it's not bespoke. That is, in the same way that a Gucci handbag or a Rolls-Royce is commodity!

@JörgWMittag: In the UK, you can have this experience as often as you like. You simply have to get your mobile phone service from Three.

comment Should I open Source my iOS application?
Presumably, it's not just the GPL that is disallowed, but any copyleft license which requires that source code be distributed along with object code. The GPL is far and away the most popular such license, but there are a few others.

comment Protobuf design patterns
At one point, i looked into using JBoss Serialization as a more or less drop-in replacement for standard serialization. It was quite a lot faster. Not as fast as protobuf, though.

@JimmyHoffa: It's also worth thinking about whether you will ever actually get to the point where you need to shard. StackExchange serves 95 million page views a month off a non-sharded system; it's either a single master DB server, or one for StackOverflow and one for everything else, i forget. Some apps do get to the scale where they absolutely need sharding, but there probably aren't more than a few thousand such apps on the entire planet. It is overwhelmingly likely that neither mine, yours, or the OP's are among them!
