@BalusC: With respect, I don't see what makes it fishy and in what way having a factory method is better (I assume your example is analogous to mine, and getInstance() is a factory and not a singleton).

Consider the case where all chips are good (or is this not a valid input?) How would the divide-and-conquer for the first part handle this? Or if the good/bad split is 50/50 and all the answers are NO (each pairs has one good and one bad)?
