comment Can you be a manager and a programmer at the same time?
You can be a manager and programmer at the same time if you've hired the right people to work in the team.

comment What are the IEEE and ACM good for?
+1. The huge digital library is a great plus. This should make you more than just a member of an organization. Your conduct should reflect this fact.

comment Tracking software piracy to gauge strength of anti-piracy measures
@biziclop: That is why I was considering doing the independent study myself, using the second option. I know I'm not going to win against piracy, I can only dodge it.

comment Is it still relevant to learn C these days?
I think C is important if you need to interact directly with hardware often.

comment Programming skills, problem solving genius or language guru?
@Geek: You're right, deploying the best programming practices is surely important to implement the best ideas. But I'd still rank problem solving skills at the top.

comment I do not have a degree but have 7 years of experience with ASP.NET, C#, can a institute offer me a degree?
See what the market needs. I wouldn't recommend doing random certificate courses and then trying your luck. If you already have clients, you shouldn't have a problem upgrading your skills. Ask them for feedback and decide what more they need from you.

@dave.b - I'm not, but that was flattering.

comment Anti-depressant and programming: does it reduce your thinking and focusing abilities?
You should learn to mix programming with lots of physical activity. Take to football or hiking, these are better than the anti-depressants you've been relying on.

comment How do you choose a programming/data structure/algorithm book?
Read reviews on stackoverflow for the books you need. Here's one such example: stackoverflow.com/questions/366317/…

comment Usage of Pirated software at a company
@Dean: I was trying to suggest that free software options exist, and companies don't have to resort to piracy to cut costs. And I fully agree with your statement.

There are excellent open source options available today, whether for operating systems or word processing software.

comment Is there any hard data on the (dis-)advantages of working from home?
@haylem: I feel the word 'study' should have a different definition here. As Watson has explained, there's no slamming down fact sheets here. A study should mean frank observations that can be discussed, to show why WFH is the right way to go.

comment Is there any hard data on the (dis-)advantages of working from home?
@haylem: You're right, studies on any subject can be divorced from reality. The only reliable study for you is perhaps the one you carry out yourself, being fully aware of the parameters and the context.

comment Sharing programming fees with a fellow software developer
@Robert: That's true. But I want to know from people's experiences which option gives us the maximum motivation to deliver brilliant results. While money is important, I'd like it to be a distant second on my list of priorities. Putting up excellent work is most important.
