comment In Java, what are checked exceptions good for?
Exception-handling best practice is "throw early, catch late". Actual handling should mostly be placed at the "business" or "request" level, since that is the level that failure isolates to. Checked exceptions instead force developers towards handling immediately, away from best practice. They also prevent FP functional programming/ abstraction of control flow, vastly increase boilerplate, and encourage miscoding. literatejava.com/exceptions/…

comment In Java, what are checked exceptions good for?
Checked exceptions were intended for contingencies -- predictable & recoverable outcomes other than success, as distinct from failures -- unpredictable low-level/ or system problems. FileNotFound or error opening a JDBC connection were both correctly considered contingencies. Unfortunately, Java library designers made a total mistake & assigned all other IO and SQL exceptions to the 'checked' class also; despite these being almost completely unrecoverable. literatejava.com/exceptions/…

comment How can I teach a bright person, with no programming experience, how to program?
Yep, get them going with the pair programming & give the simple tasks -- real tasks, on the software they're meant to be working on, in the language they're meant to be working in, with real accomplishment. Review & mentor all their work and they will progress.

comment Is learning C# as a first language a mistake?
Eclipse is a lot better for me than Visual Studio. But I agree with you -- C# would be a great language, especially if it weren't owned by & locked into the evil proprietary standards-destroying dark overlord of Redmond.
