My current job description is Solutions Engineer (End User focused). My skills include programming and scripting in several languages, automation obviously, Windows and Linux systems, MS Active Directory, troubleshooting, OS imaging, patching, installer authoring and repackaging for deployment, current job tasks: solutions engineering, design, testing and research.

A little MS SQL knowledge, enough to pull data off it but not a DBA. Some VMWare knowledge as well but mostly using the Workstation product (great for quick testing/modifying software and installers).

I have a BS in Software Engineering and I'm MCTS on MS 70-640, ITIL v3 Foundations Certified.

Currently learning Python, Perl, and Cassandra.

comment Which programming language is the best to start learning/teaching about programming
@Tshepang All languages are created with a purpose in mind, the older the language the older its purpose is. Newer languages have new features and methods, so as long as they are popular and widely used they will remain relevant for some time. Until a new one is created that makes it a lot easier to do/create something.

comment Best practices for using namespaces in C++
+1 @Fred Nurk for the full analysis instead of one line answers. You don't have to read the book to know what the question is about. This comment thread exposes the concepts and differences that a C++ and a Java programmer might have on this book.Clean Code comment in Amazon

comment Why Java as a First Language?
you might find this thread helpfull: programmers.stackexchange.com/questions/24159/…, besides that Java compiled code is portable to other OSes which the rest are not as easily done. Plus someone thought that OOP is the only thing that needs to be teached...I dont agree.

comment Should a programmer know Linux?
Maybe a "regular combustion engine" Ford mechanic doesn't need to learn about John Deer tractors, but I bet learning about electric/hybrid car will come in handy soon.

I would stay away from Perl at least for a first language. It's great for a couple of one liners but it can get messy.
