Academics should know this! I'm sure I learned this in my first C course at university. It wasn't a C course even, it was called "Structured and Object Oriented programming" as first programming course in the first semester of the first year, and C was used/introduced to explain the structured programming concepts.

comment When should JavaScript generate HTML?
I'm making my first webapp (as they are called these days, I have java/c++ background). And it seems natural to me to generate a lot of html with JS as the user goes through a process where he needs several different UI components, and I never reload the page

comment Are short identifiers bad?
I agree but only for a longer complex formulas, because they tend to get too long, and even then you could use functions (function names) to describe what parts of that formula are.
