It may seem like a headache, but it forces you to think in terms of atomic components that need to be compatible with one another, and ultimately it will lead to cleaner code.

Well it's going to be a judgement call, a matter of seeing the trajectory of the core's evolution, and whether you want the core components to be overridable in implementation. "Static linking" of components will always be faster than dynamic linking, but this is micro-optimization. Worry more about file I/O and inefficient SQL. Basically what I meant is if you can see static linking becoming a maintenance issue, don't do it.
