Last year, I got called in for jury duty. When it came time for deliberation (and lunch) I asked "So, how do we decide who's the jury foreman". Since I mentioned it, I became the jury foreman. "The leader of this project will be the person who steps up and takes charge". Exactly right.

I know that when I have to really think through a problem, it helps to print out source code and sit away from the computer to work it out, because doing it at the computer encourages hacking. But good advice on this one.

This is why student orgs and user groups are so valuable. They give you a chance to learn to be comfortable presenting to people. It isn't all written communication that you need. (Not that written communication isn't invaluable, too.)
