The problem is that my simple unit test case shows 0 difference. The JIT seems reasonably smart to not copy if it doesn't need to. Besides 1M strings is much too small of a sample given my test created 6M+ in under 10s. I double we'll ever see a completed benchmark since this has been in Hadoop for nearly two years now.

@MathewFoscarini that comment adds nothing to the conversation nor clarifies anything. It is also wrong in that I never said I wanted things to work this way, only that we have some considerations that must take place. Some of the answers below address all of my points well.

And if you have a mission critical data issue during primetime that the business requires to fixed ASAP? Not saying you're wrong but this process would seem to take a non trivial time to work though.
