comment What are the safety benefits of a type system?
@imsoconfused surely that quickly becomes unmanageable as you add complexity though - in the expression a/(b+c) what do the types of b and c have to be to guarantee no divide by zeros?

comment When should pointers be checked for NULL in C?
Checking malloc for NULL isn't always enough- for example Linux will happily overallocate memory, returning a non-NULL address, and leave it for the out of memory killer to deal with it.

comment I don't understand the arguments against operator overloading
The concerns are the same for any project with a similar development process, regardless of language. Excessive overloading can make it difficult to understand the impact of changes if all you have to go on are a few lines from a patch file.

comment Why are private variables described in the publicly accessible header file?
Try using a pimpl, a pointer to a private implementation. Since all class pointers are the same size you don't have to define the implementation class, only declare it.
