You're right, and thank you for your opinion, except that I think there are others much more qualified to answer that part than I am - Java and C++ aren't exactly my home turf.

comment How is major software protected?
While I agree it doesn't seem to answer the question posed in the headline, it does (IMHO) answer the question of "what a small software company [...] should do", as posed in the last paragraph. And sometimes, answering the unasked question might be more helpful than correctly answering a question without regard for the context. Anyway, I'm fine if this doesn't get your upvote, but I still think it's a useful (if a little abrasive) answer.

comment How many hours can you be really productive per day? How?
For me, the situation has much improved. I'm still at my old job, but much more productive than before. Why? * My job grew much more interesting and my responsibilities (and freedoms) grew * I eat less * I move more (took up a sport, take bike to work) * My meds kicked in (turns out I have hypothyroidism, which makes you tired). This gradual "kicking in" took months. * I make an effort to start the day early and productively * I try and face obstacles I fear, so they don't become roadblocks. So if you're facing the dilemma I faced, ask yourself what caused it, and make changes in your life.

Since this has been closed, I can't add my own answer (more than two years later) so I'm doing it in a comment.

@vartec Sorry, I tend to forget it's not available for the 13". But it is for the 15" and 17".

This answer again proves that often, the best option is telling the truth in a polite way. The asker actually mentioned being interrupted by his colleague, and this (very good, don't get me wrong!) answer basically just tells him: Go ahead and tell your colleague that the interruptions are bothering you. Sometimes, the obvious needs to be pointed out before we can see it.

@vartec MBPs are available in matte. (I also prefer matte, though I have to say, the glossy screen of my MBP - from a time when they did only come in glossy - only bothers me when I'm outside with it)

comment How faster is an 'if' construct compared to an immediate 'if' statement (IIF) and when should I use it?
@Yannis Rizos While we're on the subject of syntax and naming things, ? : is not the ternary operator, it is a ternary operator. While your language might not implement other ternary operators, this is far from the only one possible. Ternary simply means it takes three arguments. If you want to give it a name, call it the conditional operator.

You sound self-employed. Congratulations on being able to pull off such a rigorous schedule, and thank you for your answer! I can see a few trends emerging from your and many other answers: Chunk time and tasks, eat healthily, do not stare at the screen ALL the time, move your body. And try to be enthusiastic about your work.

Thank you. Joel's article (and some of the great comments over there) really put my mind at ease: If somebody as successful and insightful as him is having the same problem, maybe I'm not "broken" after all. His honesty was very refreshing, and for the first time in my life I actually grok why it is important to feel part of a group. I guess I had just never had so much doubt in myself. Still, this problem being ubiquitous doesn't mean we should accept it without putting up a fight.

@John Isaacks: Make this an answer so I can upvote it. This is very relevant. Thanks!

Measurable developer productiveness? Greater minds have failed to produce or find a software development productivity measurement metrics that actually works.

Great answer, and great counter question! I am mostly describing 1; if it's #2, I'll usually ask a colleague to help me (and don't take this sentence out of context, please ;))

Thank you for the answer. Of course I didn't mean to ask "why am I not typing for eight hours straight?". I know the typing is just the small, visible top of the development iceberg. What I meant was "how many hours per work day is your mind on the task? Why isn't my mind focussed on the project 8 hours/day? How do you deal with this, or isn't this a problem at all, and it's perfectly normal to spend several hours per day at work not really working, because that's the way the mind works"

Define "productive"? Come on! I think it's pretty clear what that means in this context: To have the mind focussed on the problems I'm paid to work on.

comment Why do programmers use or recommend Mac OS X?
The computer, including the OS, just works. If I need to migrate the complete system to another machine, that's done with a few clicks and half an hour of waiting, and I can go on working as if nothing happened. Of course, this is not exclusive to development, but I want my working environment to get out of the way. The Mac does - granted, Windows machines nowadays do, too.

comment Monitor aspect ratio; Does the difference matter?
There is at least one HP screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio: The zr24w. It's also the cheapest high-res (1920 * 1200) screen with an IPS panel out there. It's not very beautiful, it's certainly not thin, it doesn't use a fancy LED back light. But it's practical, pivotable, 16:9, high-res, has a practical size, and displays colors more or less correctly. It's still at least twice as expensive as a cheap TN 16:9, 1920*1080 sceen is, though. I liked mine at work, and got the same at home.

On LCDs, there is no burn-in, so the letterbox stripes on top and bottom of 16:10 screens will NOT look different, even after years of use.
