True, understandability does depend a lot on variable/ function names and definitely on the background. Because if one has some programming background he can think in code and literally follow the logic even with cryptic identifiers.

Yes, a non-programmer is an abstract description, so we can try to judge a program by how much sense it makes considering it to be plain English. e.g. if i in s then print i is a better choice as opposed to if (s.indexOf(i)) echo i
