@RobertHarvey I meant that usually search engines aren't focused on the use case of being a primary data store, make your "system of record" something else

It can be hard to avoid aliasing as a way to avoid copying messages around in protocol code. Plus what you can and can't do in strict aliasing is not well understood. Still the code you cite has been around a while. I would avoid creating new projects with strict aliasing disabled.

I could see it making sense for them to make the first proposal based on general input. But that doesn't mean the conversation stops at the first proposal.
