End-to-end tests versus unit tests, should tests be decoupled? I see unit tests as being valuable mostly because they localize problems quickly. End-to-end are valuable because they give you confidence that everything works together. |

Why is it a good idea for “lower” application layers not to be aware of “higher” ones? This is helpful, and thanks for the link. I wish I could select two answers as the best one. I basically flipped a coin in my head and picked the other one, but I still upvoted yours. |

Why is it a good idea for “lower” application layers not to be aware of “higher” ones? Maybe it's because the data comes "up" from the database to the view. It "starts" at the database and "arrives" at the view. Layer awareness goes in the opposite direction as the data "travels." I like to use "quotes." |

What to do as a new team lead on a project with maintainability problems? I have read WEWLC, and it's really good. Probably the most valuable thing the book provides is the knowledge that there ARE ways of dealing with the crappy things you come across in legacy projects and you CAN reverse the process of software rot. |

What skills should I cultivate to become a development/technical lead? I can second the benefits of Toastmasters. It's helped me quite a bit in my career. Being able to clearly communicate your thoughts (especially technical thoughts to non-technical people) is an invaluable skill to possess. |

Developing with confidence without a real development environment Okay, so maybe a good take-away point there is that if you can't have a full dev environment, test accounts in production can be the next best thing. |
